WHO IS SHE?
Santa Muerte is known by many names and is believed to be the most powerful saint by her followers while at the same time, has been condemned by the Catholic religion as high up as the Vatican. An all encompassing saint, with a broad domain, as death touches every aspect of life, she can be petitioned to for all that one needs, unlike other saints who protect certain groups or have a specific cause. Santa Muerte is the antithesis of the Virgin Mary often portrayed as a skeletal form of the ‘Lady of Guadalupe’. She has accumulated a large following of the downtrodden of society as well as the wealthy elite. Viewed by authorities as the saint of gangs, the cartel, prostitutes and night workers, she is found in shrines along the war torn borders of Mexico but also in homes of the elite as far way as Japan.
